If you’re looking for a truly unusual bonsai, one that breaks what many people consider to be the overly rigid styling rules of bonsai, you might want to check out this Juniper Bonsai grown in the Literati Style. If ever there was a way to support the statement that easy care does not necessarily spell boring, here is the proof.

This tree is forty inches tall, so first stand back and imagine the impact that this tree will have on display in your home. The height is very much in keeping with the literati style which is becoming more popular all the time and basically features a tall, thin trunk with a few branches at the crown. Not many bonsai adapt well to this style but the evergreen conifers like the Juniper Bonsai suit it well. My only hesitation with Junipers as an indoor feature is that I don’t believe they are at their best when grown inside. Juniper Procumbens “nana” which is the variety I’m talking about in this note will tolerate indoor growth, because it will grow naturally in a climate zone 9, which doesn’t get really cold in the winter. But it isn’t a full time living room tree. Have a cooler, bright spot where it can spend the winter when it’s not on display and when the weather warms up, do it huge favor and find a sheltered outdoor spot for it to spend the summers.
